Kevin P. Mahoney, 22, veered off the Maine Turnpike in Wells, Maine, and into the woods on Sunday, March 5, around 8:00 a.m., according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Mahoney, who was driving a black 2008 Buick Lacrosse, was heading south near mile marker 18.5 when he drove off the road and struck a tree. He was the only occupant in the car and was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to Mahoney's Facebook profile, he attended Dracut High School and lived in South Portland, Maine.

"He was always a positive light in the room," said a Facebook post memorializing Mahoney. "Always sat quietly with a smile on his face. Not a single mean bone in his body."

"Rest In Peace Kevin," said another post. "You were such a sweet soul."

Wells Fire and Rescue and the Maine Turnpike Authority responded to the crash.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but speed appears to be a factor in the crash, the Maine Department of Public Safety said.
